
President Orders Prosecution of Lalu Prasad Yadav in Land-For-Job Money Laundering Scandal

In relation to the purported money-laundering scandal involving Land-for-Jobs within Indian Railways, prominent sources reported this on Thursday.
The President has approved the permission as per Section 197(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code (currently Section 218 of the Indian Legal System Act, 2023).
The Enforcement Directorate (
ED
) commenced its inquiry under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), following an initial report (FIR) submitted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The FIR contends that

During his term as Railway Minister from 2004 to 2009, he was involved in corruption by arranging appointments for Group D positions in return for plots of land. Allegedly, these properties were transferred by those seeking jobs or their relatives and were subsequently registered under the names of Lalu Yadav’s family members, whether directly or indirectly.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the applicants or their relatives were instructed to hand over pieces of land as bribes in exchange for railway employment positions within the Indian Railways. These lands, whether directly or indirectly, ended up being registered under the names of the families involved.

submitted its Prosecution Complaint (PC) on January 8, 2024, as per the regulations set forth in the PMLA, 2002, against Amit Katnal and his family members.
