Toll Rises to At Least 40 as Weekend Tornadoes Ravage the US

At least 40 people have died as a result of the devastating tornadoes and severe storms that struck the central and southern parts of the United States during the weekend, according to local officials. Additionally, many others were reported injured.

News stations throughout the impacted area broadcast footage displaying houses with their rooftops ripped away, fallen trees, and lorries turned over due to strong gusts.

In Kansas, eight individuals lost their lives when over 50 vehicles were involved in a collision due to poor visibility from a “heavy dust storm,” according to local authorities.

The local emergency management agency reported that in Oklahoma, four individuals lost their lives due to raging wildfires coupled with powerful gusts sweeping through the region.

The governor of Mississippi stated in a tweet that at least six individuals have died in the state, with three others remaining unaccounted for.

“We are closely tracking the devastating tornadoes and storms that have affected numerous states throughout the South and Midwest,” President Donald Trump stated earlier Sunday on Truth Social, reporting the death toll at 36.

He mentioned that National Guard members were dispatched to Arkansas, where authorities reported three fatalities and thirty-two injuries due to the storm.

“The destruction is immense,” Governor Mike Kehoe of Missouri stated following his visit to some of the most severely affected regions in the state.

Houses and establishments have been devastated, whole neighborhoods lack electricity, and the path to recuperation will be challenging.

Earlier, the Missouri State Highway Patrol confirmed 12 storm-related fatalities and shared images of boats piled on top of one another at a marina destroyed by the weather.

In Texas, officials reported that four individuals perished in car crashes connected to dust storms and blazes that decreased visibility on the highways.

Last year, the United States experienced the second-greatest number of tornadoes ever recorded, totaling almost 1,800, as reported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Only the year 2004 had more.
