Wale Edun Challenges Finance Directors: Boost GDP by 7% Now!
The Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister of Finance, Mr Wale Edun, has urged senior officials at the Federal Ministry of Finance to implement reforms aimed at boosting Nigeria’s GDP growth rate to 7% annually as part of the New Hope Agenda set forth by the Tinubu government.
The disclosure was made in a statement issued on Friday by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Mohammed Manga, during the inauguration of the 2025 Ministerial Performance Management Workshop at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Yola, Adamawa State.
The two-day retreat, centered around the theme “Enhancing Performance Management for Fiscal Stability,” gathered directors from various departments within the ministry along with key stakeholders to evaluate advancements and improve execution capabilities.
Opening the retreat, Edun advocated for “a fresh sense of purpose, tangible outcomes, and ongoing economic restructuring,” encouraging directors to take up their responsibilities in safeguarding Nigeria’s financial reliability.
As reported, Edun stated, ‘The aspirations of both the government and Nigerian citizens have never been greater. You stand at the heart of executing these policies. To a significant degree, the success of this ministry hinges on how effectively you perform.’
He restated President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to elevating millions of Nigerians from poverty via comprehensive development and highlighted that although the economy has stabilized, the subsequent step is to boost economic growth to achieve an annual GDP increase of 7 percent.
Edun also applauded the Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, for organizing the retreat, acknowledging “the commendable progress achieved during his tenure.”
On behalf of the governor, the Deputy Governor of Adamawa State, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, conveyed a goodwill message stating that the state takes pride in hosting this retreat. This event is consistent with larger efforts towards fiscal reform.
“Adamawa remains dedicated to achieving national development objectives. It is an honor for us to host this retreat, highlighting the significance of synchronizing local governance with federal financial restructuring,” she stated.
Previously, Mrs. Lydia Jafiya, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, highlighted the importance of achieving the goals set for the retreat, underscoring the difficulties posed by constrained resources and increasing public demands.
“As we address the challenges posed by scarce resources, increasing public demands, and the necessity for efficient governance, effective performance management grows from being merely pertinent to becoming essential for our financial well-being and shared prosperity,” she stated.
She encouraged directors to instill a culture focused on performance and accountability, aligning with the Ministry’s mission to oversee the country’s financial matters in an open and efficient manner.
