PIB Takes Action: Debunking Fake Claims and Combating Misinformation on Social Media

New Delhi [India], May 9 (ANI): The Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check unit has refuted false information spreading on social media alleging that Indian Muslims initiated fires in Delhi.

After investigation, it was revealed that the video going viral on social media, which alleged that Indian Muslims had initiated fires in Delhi, was actually an older clip showing the large blaze that occurred at the Delhi Haat marketplace in the INA district a few days prior.

The unit offered a link to a report to support its conclusions, encouraging the public not to be misled by false information.

The PIB Fact Check team advised citizens to rely solely on verified data provided by the government and official channels, noting that this misinformation is strategically crafted as part of a broader disinformation effort aimed at misleading the populace and disrupting social cohesion.

On X, the official PIB Fact Check account posted, “A widely shared video on social media wrongly suggests that Indian Muslims initiated fires in Delhi. In reality, this footage depicts the large blaze that occurred at the Delhi Haat market in the INA district of Delhi on the night of April 30, 2025. This misinformation forms part of an orchestrated effort aimed at deceiving the public and disrupting communal peace. Kindly rely solely on verified data provided by governmental bodies and authorized channels.”
