UAE Pledges Support for Historic Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Project
The organization has finalized plans to participate in funding the development of a natural gas pipeline connecting Nigeria with Morocco and extending further north into Europe. The total cost of this initiative is approximately $25 billion.
As reported by domestic media outlets in the foreign country, Moroccan Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, informed Parliament regarding the UAE’s decision. She also mentioned that various organizations have already endorsed this initiative.
“As far as financing goes, the project has received backing from the Inter-American Development Bank, the OPEC Fund for International Development, the European Investment Bank, and the government of the United Arab Emirates,” she stated.
She mentioned that “Morocco has finished all initial feasibility and engineering studies for the proposed natural gas pipeline that aims to link Nigeria with Morocco.”
As per information from industry insiders, the initiative, supported by the Economic Community of West African States, reportedly completed both the feasibility study phase and the front-end engineering stage successfully.
The initial stage aims to link Morocco with offshore natural gas fields near Senegal and Mauritania, along with connecting Ghana to the Ivory Coast. In the subsequent stage, Nigeria will be connected to Ghana, followed by linking the Ivory Coast to Senegal in the final phase.
The pipeline, spanning 15 African nations, will link Nigeria’s natural gas infrastructure with Morocco’s southern town of Dakhla prior to extending further northwards.
The minister additionally informed lawmakers that China’s Jingye Steel Group has secured a contract to provide pipes for the initiative.
The ‘African-Atlantic Gas Pipeline’ has been renamed, with this infrastructure development being regarded as a strategic initiative highlighting Morocco’s dedication to enhancing South-South collaboration.
Nigeria and Morocco have consented to create a collaborative enterprise aimed at overseeing the extensive undertaking following the signing of a financial accord for the initiative.
The initiative aims to enhance power generation across multiple African nations, fostering greater economic collaboration among them. This effort targets a vast area encompassing over 400 million people in total.
Extending the natural gas pipeline through multiple nations opens up possibilities for economic unification by boosting regional facilities, fostering collaboration among governmental bodies and enterprises, and promoting industrial expansion within a crucial section of Africa.
The Morocco-Nigeria pipeline, which was approved in 2016, will span approximately 6,800 kilometers overall, with about 5,100 kilometers laid underwater. This groundbreaking initiative aims to break records by becoming the planet’s most extensive offshore natural gas pipeline.
Benali mentioned that the country aims to establish itself as a key center for renewable energy in the region and possesses significant potential for generating green hydrogen products.
