Egg Farmers Struggle as Sales Slump: An International Perspective
Nigerian poultry farmers are sounding the alarm due to a significant drop in egg sales, blaming this slump on financial difficulties and reduced spending capacity among residents.
The farmers report a considerable decline in egg sales following the elimination of the fuel subsidy, expressing concern over the concurrent rise in poultry feed costs and how this affects their egg production.
During a courtesy call on Governor Umar Namadi at the Government House in Dutse on Thursday evening, Hussaini Gumel, who leads the Poultry Farmers Association of Nigeria in Jigawa State, expressed his concerns. Hussaini Gumel serves as the state chairman for this association.
Following the elimination of the fuel subsidy in 2023, our sector has faced significant challenges. Numerous people in Nigeria can now not afford eggs anymore, causing our sales to drop sharply.
The present economic climate has intensified the difficulties, as numerous Nigerians find it hard to purchase chickens and eggs because of their constrained finances. Our products have no marketplace, and the scarcity of adequate funds circulating amongst individuals is concerning.
He stated that apart from weak consumer interest, the sector was struggling with rising manufacturing expenses, particularly expensive bird fodder.
The chairman mentioned that farmers are encountering infrastructural issues, notably insufficient refrigeration and cooling facilities required for preserving perishable goods amidst Nigeria’s tropical weather conditions.
Gumel requested governmental intervention at the poultry farm to avoid further product losses.
In an effort to increase demand and secure a consistent marketplace for their goods, the association requested the government to include eggs in school meal initiatives, stating, “It would enhance usage and prevent poultry enterprises from complete failure.”
In reply, Governor Namadi recognized the significant contribution of poultry farming to employment generation and food security, promising the farmers that his government would address their concerns.
