Australians expressed their anger after discovering that neither
King Charles
or any member of the British
royal family
will be included in the redesigned version of Australia’s $5 banknote.
The following edition of the note, which had included the late
Queen Elizabeth II
Since 1992, it will highlight a theme celebrating Indigenous Australians.
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) stated, “The design on the $5 bill ought to acknowledge the profound relationship between First Nations people and their land—a bond that is both emotional and spiritual, as well as physical.”
Angry Australians criticized the decision extensively on various social media platforms.
“There are numerous historical figures listed on our currency who have passed away; why should Queen Elizabeth be removed when so many others remain? Given our connection to the monarchy and her status as the longest-reigning monarch, this decision appears unjustified and disrespectful,” a commenter noted.

The design for the new $5 bill was selected from over 2,100 entries submitted by the public; however, the definitive artwork hasn’t been finalized yet. The Reserve Bank of Australia stated they aim to ‘steer clear of tokenism or stereotypes’ during this selection process.
The RBA stated its intention to acknowledge ‘the contributions made by First Nations communities to the restoration and preservation of our natural surroundings.’
‘Traditional knowledge enables First Nations people to remain stewards for maintaining and protecting Country,’ the statement read.
‘All Australians have the chance to gain insights from the indigenous peoples of Australia—who were the first caretakers—on how to care for and safeguard our delicate planet.’
