The governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has proclaimed Peter Obi, who ran for president under the Labour Party in 2023, as the head of Nigeria’s opposition. He additionally suggested the possibility of forming an alliance leading up to the 2027 elections.

Mohammed, who leads the PDP Governors’ Forum, stated this on Thursday following a private discussion with Obi in Bauchi. He indicated his willingness to work together with Obi to save Nigeria from “those inadequate individuals pretending to be leaders.”

“Regardless of our feelings, Peter Obi has become the face of the opposition in Nigeria due to his status and experience. I am prepared to collaborate with him to achieve better governance for the nation,” stated Mohammed.

He stressed the importance of a unified opposition, saying, “We shall unite, strengthen our ranks, and provide dynamic opposition through wisdom, foresight, and set deadlines. The objective is to save and restore Nigeria from these incompetent leaders.”

When asked whether the collaboration involved bringing Obi back into the PDP, Mohammed brushed off the query as merely being about ‘semantics.’

Gathering as one does not revolve around political parties, regions, or religions; rather, it centers on public service,” he stated. “We are leaders—Nigerian statesmen and politicians—who share a common purpose: to serve our people. This unity embodies our commitment.

Mohammed added, “This partnership goes beyond political affiliations, religious beliefs, or individual interests. Regardless of which party holds power, they often act as funeral directors for various groups. However, we will employ wisdom, diplomacy, and strategic planning to overcome such divisions. We aim to surpass expectations and develop a structure that realizes our shared goals: delivering effective governance to the people of Nigeria.”

He similarly condemned individuals trying to weaken democracy, stating, “We will oppose those who believe they can halt democracy via intimidation or judicial manipulation. Our focus is on constructing a stronger Nigeria, and we remain dedicated to this cause.”

Obi: Emphasizes cooperation in areas such as poverty alleviation, education, and advancement.

Obi stated that his trip was aimed at continuing discussions about Nigeria’s future. He characterized Mohammed as a key figure in Nigerian politics and highlighted the importance of tackling issues such as poverty, education, and progress.

“The Northern region is essential for our success as a nation. Tackling poverty is crucial because unless we address this problem first, discussing reductions in crime will be futile,” Obi stated.

He emphasized the capability of agriculture to reshape Nigeria’s economy, noting, “The revenue from agriculture could surpass that from oil in Nigeria. During my travels, I have witnessed extensive tracts of unused land throughout the nation. It is crucial for us to channel investments into education, healthcare, and essential infrastructure to lift individuals out of poverty.”

Obi took aim at the prevailing political discussion, stating that it emphasizes inconsequential matters instead of addressing the genuine requirements of the populace.

We aren’t in Nollywood, unfortunately,” he remarked. “Politics has turned into entertainment instead. Each day starts with tales of budget inflation or sexual misconduct, yet we fail to address critical concerns like hunger, poverty, or education. Those are the real issues at hand.

When asked about how their partnership would function despite being from opposing political parties, Obi stated that the collaboration was progressing steadily. He further explained, “Building a strong relationship takes time; it’s not something achieved overnight.” He emphasized that their main objective was to create a more prosperous Nigeria for future generations.

APC refutes allegations, states government is already aiding Nigeria

In the meantime, the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected the opposition leaders’ assertions, maintaining that the administration led by Bola Tinubu is actively tackling Nigeria’s issues.

The APC National Director of Publicity, Alhaji Bala Ibrahim, informed Daily Trust that the word ‘mediocrity’ is not applicable to the APC.

They haven’t named anyone, so we shouldn’t presume they’re alluding to us. It’s possible they’re discussing the lack of cohesion among their own group,” he stated.

Ibrahim pointed out the APC’s recent gatherings of the National Caucus and the National Executive Committee (NEC), noting that they were conducted without any discord.

“The NEC expressed trust in both the party’s leadership and the presidency. Under our oversight, Nigeria is set for a prosperous future,” he stated.

He encouraged the opposition to take notes from the APC’s strategy, stating, “Should they wish to suggest that we are subpar, they ought to examine how we’re managing the nation. We are slowly but surely transitioning from hardship to prosperity.”

The gathering between Obi and Mohammed has fueled rumors about a possible partnership forming before 2027, independent from their respective party’s electoral processes. This comes particularly into focus as each leader stressed the importance of focusing on effective administration rather than engaging in typical partisan politics.
