There are suggestions that a previous Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and a former minister are likely key figures in the developing alliance aimed at contesting the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2027 general elections.
The Nigerian Tribune learned over the weekend that both individuals are actively working behind the scenes to rally support from key stakeholders nationwide for their coalition effort.
They join forces with prominent politicians such as ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Transport Minister Honourable Rotimi Amaechi, engaging in intensive discussions with peers from various political backgrounds to create a comprehensive platform strong enough to challenge the APC.
The source said though the ex-minister is currently playing a low profile in the mobilization drive, the South-East-born politician is said to be the key facilitator of the movement.
He was also a former chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of a prominent government agency and member of the House of Representatives.
It is said that he shares similar views with the former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, who left the APC for the SDP due to fundamental disagreements regarding how the governing party was being managed.

The ex-Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) pledged to persuade prominent political figures to become part of the SDP with the aim of uniting forces to challenge the APC in future elections across the nation.
Another individual noted for operating discreetly from behind the scenes is the SGF during the Buhari administration.
“All of them share the same situation; it’s merely Mallam Nasir El-Rufai who is speaking out. He certainly does not hold a coordinating role,” confided an associate close to one of the leaders to the Nigerian Tribune.
Several notable political figures, such as a previous Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Rauf Aregbesola, along with a former Senior Special Assistant, a past Minister of State for Education, and a former Minister of Transportation, are putting in extra effort. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is also actively involved in this alliance. However, Rufai seems to be the main spokesperson for this group.
“The nearest to a coordinator of all they have is the former minister for education. He is an absolutely brilliant young man, who was a minister and member of the National Assembly,” the source claimed.
However, there were suggestions that the SDP might serve as a temporary solution for the coalition, as the leaders are considering the broader strategy of selecting the most suitable platform to confront the APC in the 2027 election.
