Experts Call for Customs to Adopt Technology for Improved Service Delivery

The Customs Consultative Committee has called upon the Nigeria Customs Service to utilize cutting-edge technology to enhance the organization’s effectiveness.

On Wednesday, the organization issued a statement signed by its Secretary, Mr Eugene Nweke, which also urged the service to offer training and capacity development initiatives for NSC officials.

The organization praised the NCS for its outstanding execution in implementing import rules and boosting revenues within the framework of the National Strategic Economic Development Plan.

“Offer training and development initiatives for National Customs Service personnel, strengthen ties with key partners to encourage adherence and streamline trade processes, and continually improve risk evaluation methods. Utilize cutting-edge technology. Host workshops, symposiums, and educational drives to inform traders about the details and impacts of the updated Customs Act 2023,” stated CCC.

The team also emphasized the importance of ensuring the service upholds the 7Cs of the service and adheres to the principles outlined in the Alushta Declaration on Customs Integrity.

As stated by CCC, the service must enhance both the server infrastructure and bandwidth for the B’Odowgu platform, “to guarantee smooth transactions and reduce system downtime.”

At the same time, the team recognized the accomplishments of the NCS in stopping banned and restricted goods from entering Nigeria, such as the recent seizure of unauthorized medications and outdated margarine products at the Apapa Port Command.

The CCC acknowledged the guidance provided by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, along with other officials, for their foresight and dedication to achieving excellence.

The emphasis was placed on how the leadership played a crucial role in enhancing the service’s performance and guaranteeing the successful execution of the NSEDP.

Moving ahead, CCC encouraged the NCS to put these suggestions into practice over the coming half-year period and conveyed faith in the organization’s capability to keep producing exceptional outcomes.
