GACL Regains Airport Lands From McDan Group After Court Ruling
Accra, May 9, GNA – Following a favorable court decision, the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has successfully reclaimed key pieces of airport land from the McDan Group of Companies.
On May 6, 2025, an Accra High Court issued a ruling that gave GACL complete access and control over more than 16 acres of land previously held by entities affiliated with the McDan Group.
The properties in question, spanning roughly 10.63 acres and 5.66 acres respectively, are situated next to and across from the Action Chapel International, close to the Kotoka International Airport.
These assets were formerly owned by McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited, which are part of the McDan Group, since 2012.
In February 2025, GACL filed a writ and a statement of claim against the two entities, citing long standing breaches of land lease agreements and outstanding ground rents.
The company sought the recovery of $26,296 in accrued ground rent for the use of the lands.
Furthermore, an ongoing restraining order was imposed on the defendants to prevent them from interfering with the land.
After the legal proceedings, GACL filed for summary judgment, arguing that the defendants did not have a legitimate defense.
The court sided with GACL, granting all requested remedies and directing the defendants to cover $10,396 USD in legal fees.
In December 2024, McDan Aviation had their activities halted at Terminal 1 of Kotoka International Airport (KIA) because of unpaid debts.
Although those specific debts were later cleared, the land dispute remained unresolved until this legal intervention.
GACL’s leadership praised the court’s ruling as a major victory in asset recovery.
The recovery of this land not only protects millions of dollars’ worth of state resources but also strengthens the company’s dedication to transparency and responsible handling of communal properties.
The victorious legal battle is attributed to the joint efforts of GACL’s Legal Department and Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, the managing director at GACL, who led the initiative for recovering assets.
This advancement leads GACL to anticipate exploring fresh strategies for the repurposed areas, possibly focusing on expanding aviation capabilities or forming strategic alliances, all within larger initiatives aimed at enhancing airport facilities and boosting income generation.
