Mari Energies Hits First Gas Discovery with Soho-1 Well in Sindh – International Edition
On May 10, Mari Energies Limited, previously known as Mari Petroleum Company Limited (MARI), announced the discovery of natural gas at its Soho-1 exploration well within the Sujawal Block in Sindh province.
The E&P, operating the Sujawal Block with a full working interest, announced this development in a statement submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Friday. According to the notification, Mari Energies Limited happily reported discovering natural gas within the Soho-1 exploration well situated in the Sujawal Block of Sujawal District, Sindh province. The firm mentioned they conducted tests for gas flow rates using two distinct choke settings.
With a 64/64″ choke, the well yielded 30.01 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of natural gas at a pressure of 1,482.5 psi. In contrast, when using a 32/64″ choke, it produced 18.84 MMSCFD but under significantly higher pressure conditions—specifically, 3,447.8 psi. The firm reported ongoing tests aimed at assessing additional target layers within the formation to better gauge the full extent of the well’s capabilities.
“It should be noted that this represents the initial detection of gas from the Lower Goru (Massive Sand) layer located in the Sujawal Block,” they stated. “This breakthrough marks an important development as it introduces fresh prospects for exploration into these massive sand deposits following numerous unsuccessful attempts in the area.”
In March, Mari Energies Limited initiated hydrocarbon extraction from the Shewa discovery within the Waziristan Block in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to the firm’s recent financial outcomes, MARI reported a post-tax profit of Rs11.17 billion for the second quarter of the fiscal year 2025 (2QFY25). This represents a decrease of more than 39% from the Rs18.36 billion recorded in the corresponding period last year. The reduction in profitability can be linked to decreased income alongside elevated costs throughout this timeframe.
