The Moroccan security forces, which include both the Royal Gendarmerie and the National Police, assisted by Civil Protection teams, have initiated digging activities close to the boundary with the Spanish territory of Ceuta.
The activities underway in the “Arroyo de las Bombas” region are focused on finding an outlet connected to a potential tunnel utilized for traffickinghashish from Morocco intoCeuta.
As reported by the Spanish newspaper El Faro de Ceuta, this operation is a collaborative probe conducted alongside Spanish officials as part of “Operation Hades,” which aims at dismantling transnational drug-smuggling organizations. The publication included photos depicting security forces carrying out inspections in the region.
In recent days, Moroccan teams have kept up their efforts in conducting ground searches through sophisticated means such as detectors and imaging equipment aimed at pinpointing possible openings of tunnels. The digs conducted under strict confidentiality recently centered around an area within Tarajal, where preliminary data indicated a connection between the passageway and adjacent storage facilities.
A second excavation, conducted on Sunday, reinforced the possibility of the tunnel connecting to a nearby shack. Civil Protection teams, equipped with specialized equipment, entered both excavation sites for further inspection.
Recently, Spanish and Moroccan security authorities, featuring delegates from Spain’s Department of Home Affairs and the Civil Guard’s military liaison officer based in Morocco, convened to synchronize their strategies.
A specialized underground reconnaissance unit from the Spanish Civil Guard is expected to arrive soon to verify the tunnel’s cross-border connection, following an official request for judicial and political cooperation.
The initial discoveries suggest that the tunnel, found earlier this year by the Spanish Civil Guard, could have several exit points. Authorities in Spain have apprehended 14 people so far as part of their probe, and they continue to pursue the rest of the smugglers involved in the network.
