Packers’ Rashan Gary Tells High School Athletes: Chase Greatness by Embracing Discomfort

Packers' Rashan Gary Tells High School Athletes: Chase Greatness by Embracing Discomfort

GREEN BAY − Rashan Gary was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

He ranks 13th in team history in career sacks with 39 — a list he’s quickly climbing. He checked in at No. 50 on The NFL Top 100 player rankings by the NFL Network heading into last season. He earned his
first career Pro Bowl nod
in 2024 after producing 7.5 sacks, 47 total tackles and 15 quarterback hits.

And he’s
a cornerstone and leader
for an improving Packers defense that finished the 2024 season ranked fifth in yards allowed and sixth in points surrendered.

So, what’s the Rashan Gary blueprint for achieving success?

“Write down your goals,” said the 27-year-old defensive lineman, who was the guest speaker as part of the annual
Northeast Wisconsin High School Sports Awards
show June 20 at the Lambeau Field Atrium.

The event was
presented by Piggly Wiggly
and featured an audience of over 1,100 people that included many of the state’s top high school athletes, coaches and teams from the Appleton, Fond du Lac, Green Bay, Manitowoc, Marshfield, Oshkosh, Sheboygan, Stevens Point, Wausau and Wisconsin Rapids markets.

“Share (your goals) with someone close that you love and trust that’s going to hold you accountable,” Gary added. … “It’s going to be hard. It’s not going to be easy. It’s not supposed to be. Growing is uncomfortable, so get used to being uncomfortable — especially when you say you want to be great. …

“Be consistent with what you do. Don’t stray away from your path. And I say that meaning always have your loved ones around you. They’re the reason that you are (where you are) now. Keep the main thing, the main thing. And find a good friend. Have somebody that’s going to be on you. And from there, you’re going to be fine.”

Gary’s appearance was part of a Q&A segment in which he touched on a number of topics, including how he tackled dyslexia to not only graduate from high school with a glittering 3.9 grade-point average but also go on to earn his college degree from the University of Michigan.

He calls dyslexia his “superpower” because he feels it “enhanced” a part of his brain that helped him learn and visualize plays, schemes and formations quickly when it came to football.

“I feel like coming out with my learning disability, having dyslexia, there’s a lot of kids out there going through the same thing I had to grow up wondering,” Gary said. “And just speaking about it, it brings light to it — to understand that you’re not alone if you do have any type of learning disability.”

The show, which was supported by
Cellcom
and
Prevea Health
, honored nearly 400 prep standouts for their achievements during the 2024-25 school year, with player of the year awards handed out in 28 categories. Several premier awards were also presented, including boys athlete of the year, girls athlete of the year, coach of the year, boys team of the year, girls team of the year and our Courage Award and inaugural Trailblazer Award recipients.

Notre Dame’s James Flanigan and West De Pere’s Faith Walder were named boys and girls athlete of the year, respectively.

Flanigan has been a three-sport standout for most of his high school career in football, hockey and track and field.

As a senior, he was the Fox River Classic Conference-South co-offensive player of the year and the defensive lineman of the year in football in helping lead the Tritons to a 14-0 record and the WIAA Division 3 state title.

He also earned first-team all-state at tight end and honorable mention all-state at defensive end from the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association and was named the Al Toon Award winner as the state’s top senior receiver after finishing with 25 receptions for 609 yards and 11 touchdowns. Defensively, he posted 61 total tackles, including 19 for a loss, 13 sacks and three forced fumbles.

In track and field, Flanigan won WIAA Division 2 state titles earlier this month in the shot put and the discus as the Tritons captured the overall team title.

He ended his prep career with four individual state track and field titles, along with state team championships in football, hockey and track.

Flanigan will play football in college at the University of Notre Dame.

Walder led West De Pere to the WIAA state basketball tournament this season, where the Phantoms lost in the Division 2 semifinals to eventual state champion Wauwatosa East.

She earned first-team all-state honors from the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association after averaging 19.8 points per game and shooting 57% overall, including 38% from 3-point range, and was a four-time all-conference pick in the Bay Conference.

Walder graduated as the all-time leading scorer in Phantoms history with 1,569 career points.

As a soccer player, she helped lead West De Pere to four conference championships in all four years on varsity. She was the Bay Conference offensive player of the year this season and became West De Pere’s all-time leading goal scorer.

Walder will play basketball in college at Northern Michigan University.
