Remo Stars Tighten Grip on NPFL Title Race

Nigeria

The Premier Football League frontrunners, Remo Stars, recovered from their previous week’s setback with an impressive 2-0 win against Heartland FC in Ikenne on Sunday, maintaining their lead of eight points atop the leaderboard, as reported by PUNCH Sports Extra.

Midfielders Olamilekan Adedayo and new arrival Samson Olasubo scored goals that helped the Southwest team revive their championship aspirations after they had previously lost 2-1 to Bendel Insurance.

Adedayo scored first in the 31st minute, followed by Samson Olasupo securing the victory with a goal in the 80th.

The Sky Blue Stars started at an impressive pace right away, generating numerous opportunities within the first 15 minutes through Fabian Nworie, Sodiq Ismail, and Franck Mawuena.

The breakthrough came for them shortly after halftime when Adedayo fired a shot low into the bottom-right corner from Mawuena’s assist.

The Togolesque forward Mawuena was thwarted once more following the resumption as Remo sought an additional buffer. This security finally materialized through the feet of substitute Olasupo early in the second half. His second tally for the team within just three matches sealed the victory, courtesy of a headed finish from a pass delivered by Tochukwu Michael.

Heartland, led by former international player Emmanuel Amuneke, found themselves in 17th position following their loss, only a single point clear of the relegation zone.

In the meantime, Finidi George’s Rivers United continued their pursuit of Remo with a grueling 2-1 win away from home against El-Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri.

After a tense first half, they broke the deadlock just two minutes after the restart through Taofeek Otaniyi. Samson Bossa Obi doubled their lead in the 61st minute before El-Kanemi halved the deficit in stoppage time through Risilanu Ismail.

In Uyo, Shooting Stars encountered a significant obstacle in their championship chase, losing 2-0 toAkwa United, who are struggling against relegation, at the Nest of Champions stadium.

On Match-day 29, the excitement reached new heights at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos as Ikorodu City and past champions Enyimba battled to a thrilling 2-2 tie in front of a full house.

In the 41st minute, Tosin Oyedokun, who captains Ikorodu City, gave the home team an early lead. However, Enyimba fought back in the second half, scoring twice through Mojeeb Odufeso in the 66th minute and Joseph Atule.

While Atule’s goal seemed to have secured all three points for Stanley Eguma’s men, second-half substitute Ayomide Cole struck deep into stoppage to salvage a point for the hosts as the race for the continental spot also heats up.
