Schefter Ignites Rumors: Rams Eyeing Trade for Star Defender Jalen Ramsey

All in, or all out? That is the question that hovers over

the Los Angeles Rams

and has shrouded the team as soon as NFL Rumors linked the Rams as a potential landing site for Miami Dolphins DB Jalen Ramsey. The almost-always meticulous front office completely

ignored the cornerback position

in the 2025 NFL Draft, fueling rumors that the team would bolster the secondary with additional help.

Suspicions were later confirmed as

Rams HC Sean McVay revealed that the team

had entered into trade talks with the Dolphins for Ramsey. But entering into negotiations is a far cry from emerging with a suitable agreement, and that is a lesson that Rams fans are learning right now, the hard way.

At the time that NFL rumors grew red-hot over the likelihood of a trade to occur, the Rams roster had plenty of room, filled with 87 of the 90 authorized players. But now, the Rams have filled all 90 roster slots, and the likelihood of trading for Jalen Ramsey appears to have been pushed to the back burner, if not abandoned altogether.

The thing is, the Rams had attempted to upgrade the secondary in 2024, with little success. Veteran DB Tre’Davious White proved to be an outright bust, unable to reclaim his pre-injury form in time to help the Rams shut down opposing receivers. Likewise, veteran DB Darious Williams was unable to suit up for the team in the early weeks of the season, delaying the communication and chemistry that is vital to making a secondary pass defense hum to perfection.

It was not until the team reached out to former starting cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon that the defense began to show a bit of resilience. And yet, after all that has been laid out, the fit and impact for Jalen Ramsey is clear. Even if he can no longer be trusted to shut down the NFL’s best receivers, he is an upgrade over the team’s existing option. And he has excellent run defense skills, too.

So when the likelihood of his return to the Rams seemed to fade, fans reacted with disappointment.

But where there is a will, there is a way. And I suspect that Jalen Ramsey is willing to push the Dolphins to make a deal as quickly as possible.

Adam Schefter reignites Ramsey to Rams rumors with 1 interview

If you thought that the

Baltimore Ravens’ signing of CB Jaire Alexander

ended the major offseason signings season, you are not alone. We had expected the Rams to investigate Alexander as an option for the Rams’ secondary. Unfortunately, Coach McVay vetoed any interest in Alexander. That was that.

But he left the rumors of trading for Jalen Ramsey alive. Hmm.

But even as Sean McVay hinted that the Rams are still pursuing a trade for Ramsey, NFL Insider Adam Schefter did not hint about it at all. He came right out and said it, and stated that the timeline for such a trade to happen would be before the opening of the 2025 training camp for the acquiring team.

For the Rams,

that date is July 22, 2025

.

As Schefter elaborates, he expects the Dolphins to trade Jalen Ramsey before training camp occurs. He also makes it a point to assert that Jalen Ramsey prefers to play for a West Coast team, specifically Los Angeles, California. That pinpoints the likely landing site for Ramsey as either the Los Angeles Chargers or the Los Angeles Rams.

Is this real, or just another recording of a trade scenario on repeat? The adage of ”

Where there is smoke, there is fire

” seems to apply here. Let’s examine the evidence that we already know:

(1) – Rams did not address CB in draft

Even as the consensus of NFL Draft analysts cited the Rams roster needs in the 2025 NFL Draft as cornerback, the team did next to nothing to address the position. Encouraged by the extension of veteran CB Ahkello Witherspoon and the emergence of Emmanuel Forbes, perhaps the Rams front office believes that they have enough pieces to succeed.

Still, a chance to reunite with CB Jalen Ramsey is not just a logical trade. This has all the feel and luster of the Rams trying to get Matthew Stafford to another Super Bowl.

(2) – Rams confirmed trade talks

The amount of NFL leaks whenever the Rams are involved is scant, indeed. But unlike past practices, the Rams confirmed their interest in trading for Jalen Ramsey. Why the change? On one hand, the confirmation simply set the facts out for fans and allowed social media feedback to gauge the latent interest in trading for the former player.

But more importantly, the news confirmed interest in Jalen Ramsey and his representation. That is vital for a player who is sitting out right now, hoping that he lands in a better situation. The Rams’ news of interest allowed Ramsey to push for a trade (hopefully to the Rams) on his side, too.

(3) – Rams free up salary space at odd time of year

When the Rams released CB Derion Kendrick, it seemed as though the team was preparing to trade for Ramsey and were simply freeing up a roster spot to allow that to happen. But the fans had been

begging for a move since before OTAs

. Ironically, the team allowed Kendrick to clear waivers and then re-signed him. That ended that hope, right?

The Rams explained that the move created salary cap space. But the team seemed to choose an odd time of the season to free up salary cap space. And cap space is not something that sneaks up on a meticulous office staff. Unless a need for cap space appears to be imminent…

(4) – Rams persistently linked to Jalen Ramsey

This all brings us back to the Shefter report. Nobody could claim foul or falsehood if he simply left the NFL rumors of the Rams trading for Jalen Ramsey to die a slow death of neglect. But he did not hesitate, pushing the NFL rumors back under the national spotlight once more.

So, which is the more likely Los Angeles, California team? Any trade that puts Jalen Ramsey on the Chargers roster would allow him to haunt the Dolphins’ pursuit of a seeding in the NFL Playoffs. Conventional wisdom is that teams seldom agree to a trade with a rival.

But the Rams are an NFC team, and are one of the teams that are least likely to haunt the Dolphins’ decision to trade Jalen Ramsey in the future.

Like it or not, Rams fans, the NFL rumors of the Rams trading with the Dolphins to acquire DB Jalen Ramsey are back on the menu. As always, thanks for reading.
