One of the first things you’ll notice upon stepping in Testaccio market is the friendly atmosphere. And here’s another surprising fact: this market is mostly frequented by Italians. Take a walk and you’ll see the locals buying fresh fruit and vegetables, from tomatoes to artichokes, tasty meats and local cheeses.
More than just a lively place, the Testaccio market also welcomes families who come to sit down to lunch while children chase each other between stalls. Groups of friends often meet up at Chicchi e Lettere, a friendly bar where you can sip coffee, wine or beer and enjoy a snack.

If you’re visiting Rome for the first time, it’s a great way to discover the city with a different perspective. The experience is all about the pleasure of eating, whether it’s for breakfast, an antipasti with wine, or a proper feast at lunchtime. We can only recommend you come with an empty stomach!
The market is open Monday to Saturday from 7am to 3.30pm, making it an ideal place to discover the region’s cuisine. We recommend that you get there before 2pm, as some stalls start to close earlier. The best time to make the most of it is between 11.30am and 12.30pm, when the market is at its most active.
Restaurants for all tastes
The Testaccio market is a veritable temple to Roman gastronomy. Several restaurants and stalls offer local specialities sure to delight passing gourmets. These include Le Mani in Pasta, where you can enjoy delicious homemade pasta at a table or as a take-away. But if there’s one address you really need to visit, it’s the Mordi e Vai restaurant, famous for its paninis stuffed with tripe, meatballs and oxtail. Though do note that this is a very popular venue, so be prepared to wait for a seat!
